TheTwisted Spire

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

We have been meaning to visit Chesterfield’s Church with its twisted spire for some time. Eventually, we did. Click on each picture to see it bigger.

Just as we entered the bell room, it struck noon! What an experience! Fantastic views from the top of the tower at the base of the spire, the view here is to the north and Unstone! Insidethe tower, you look upwards to see all the originl timber from the 1300’s. The spire is not actually fixed to the tower: just gravity holds it in place. Well worth a visit, which took an hour.

One pic for location, taken from over the nearside wheel, looking towards just ahead of the axle on the offside. Second picture shows a nylatron block. This has been screwed onto the inside of the chassis rail with a couple of self tappers. It is a sliding fit against the road spring. Two on each side, one in front, the other just behind the axle.
